iSight [for Mac]

[09.07.2004]
I purchased my iSight a week after it came out and was released to the Apple stores (I frequent the one on Michigan Ave. here in Chicago). I knew that I did not NEED it, but I also knew that I love web cam technology and felt inadequate if I did not own one. At least, just to say I had one, just as I am with most Apple products! I based my decision also on a couple other variables. 30% of my decision was solely because of it's sleek design, 65% was because it worked perfectly with the newly released version of iChat and 5% was because I had to have a web cam for my Mac.

Fortunately, I was very happy with my purchase. Though, I had higher expectation of it's ability to work super well in low lights (which it does not), I was very impressed with it's speed (via Firewire) and plug & play abilities. Luckily for Apple, this is the best web cam for Macs, but only because there are not many other alternative for Mac users to choose from. Again, the best part is that it is built by Apple, just like the program it was built for, iChat. It's all about everything working together in unison... it does what it is supposed to, so there is not much more to ask of.

Now, about a year after it's release, the iSight web cam also works integrated with Apple's digital movie editing program, iMovie. I have tried a few other programs that use web cams such as, Yahoo Instant Messenger for the Mac and EvoCam for Mac users who are wanting a web cam on their web sites and the iSight has worked perfectly.

Score another one for Apple (yes, I am partial to Apple, honestly).

O' by the way, the iSight will be even more essential when the newest version of Apple's operating system is released, Tiger OS X 10.4. Video conferencing between 4 people has never looked so good. Check it out HERE for a preview.

Toodles for now!

3COM Homeconnect Web Cam [for PC]

UPDATE [11.17.2001] :: It amazes me, but 3COM has discontinued this web cam. It is a real shame, however, I am still using and loving it. Nevertheless read on, you may still be able to get this via eBay, right!

[01.09.2001]
I can't say enough great things about this web cam. The 3com Homeconnect is crisp, clear, and solid. From noon sunlight to a moon lit room, the 3com gives you a great picture. Low light is usually my number one concern in all camera products, so it was just as important to me when deciding on a webcam. I'm happy to say that the 3com did not fail me at all. The color on this baby is spectacular as well. You can easily adjust all aspects of the camera... color saturation, brightness, contrast, and even gamma and shutter speeds. Wow. So, find out for yourself. Visit my lime.cam at day and then at night, when I have my lights off. It should speak for itself.

Not much else to say about the 3com Homeconnect, when it gives me all that I expect out from it! Let me mention one other thing that I don't utilize, but appreciate that it's available. The fact that I can stretch the camera's resolution to 1024x768 at 60 frames a second. Most other cameras only go up to 640x480 resolution at 30 frames... and that is if your lucky. This is a great feature if your using the camera for security or monitoring purposes (but not for online webpage webcam purposes).

3com just lowered the price to $129.99. So if you do a little online shopping around, I'm sure that you can get it around 100 bucks!
